About the museum

The museum is located in the complex of the Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell’Impruneta and is entered through a door on the left side of the basilica’s façade. It opened in 1987 and houses goldsmiths’ work, silverware, illuminated manuscripts and other materials linked to the history of the sanctuary.

The rooms to the left of the ticket office contain a 14th-century fresco of the Madonna enthroned among angels and saints, terracotta figures of the Madonna from the 18th to the 20th century and 16th-century terracotta mezzanines, eleven illuminated codices from the 14th to the 16th century (graduals, antiphonaries and a psalter), and the funerary furnishings of the parish priest Antonio degli Agli. To the right of the ticket office is the Sala dei Silvani, above the basilica’s portico, with portraits of the Medici family and a marble bas-relief depicting the Finding of the Image of the Madonna.

In the centre of the room are displayed the most important goldsmiths’ and silver works: the Reliquary of the Holy Cross attributed to Cosimo Merlini the Elder, donated to the sanctuary in 1620 by Maria Maddalena of Austria; a silver processional cross made in 1425 in the workshop of Lorenzo Ghiberti; a pyx of 1637; two paxes of 1515 by Antonio di Salvi; and a set of six candlesticks and crosses by Massimiliano Soldani Benzi from 1711.
