About the museum
The Museo Giuliano Ghelli, also known as the Museo di San Casciano, was established in 1989 in the church of Santa Maria del Gesù, also called del Suffragio, in the center of San Casciano in Val di Pesa. The church is still active and forms part of the visit route. In 2008 the spaces were extended with some rooms of the former Benedictine convent, where nuns lived from the 17th to the 19th century.
The sacred art section, on the ground floor, brings together paintings, sculptures, silverware, liturgical vestments and other objects from churches in the area, dating from the 12th to the 20th century. Among the most important works are the panel of Saint Michael the Archangel by Coppo di Marcovaldo and the Madonna and Child by Ambrogio Lorenzetti of 1319.
On the upper floor the archaeological section presents finds from the San Casciano area, including Etruscan material such as the Stele dell’Arciere (Archer Stele) and small votive bronzes, as well as Roman-era objects. A third part is devoted to contemporary art, with works by artists linked to the Chianti, including Giuliano Ghelli himself, shown in rotation. The museum is part of the Sistema museale del Chianti e del Valdarno fiorentino.
