About the museum
The Museo del Vino is part of the network of the Musei del Cibo of the Province of Parma and is housed in the Rocca Sanvitale in Sala Baganza, about 15 kilometres from Parma.
The route has six sections. The first is devoted to the archaeology of wine, with finds and images from local excavations carried out together with the Museo Archeologico Nazionale; it recalls that the Celts introduced the “modern” way of drinking undiluted wine from glasses. Next come the vine and viticulture, with farm tools of the last century and a film on the “maritata” method (vines trained up trees), then the grape harvest and winemaking, with tools and documents on the local history of wine, from medieval crafts to the French techniques brought by the Bourbons. References include Garibaldi, who loved Malvasia, and Giuseppe Verdi, a passionate viticulturist.
The fourth section is a Renaissance ice house with 360-degree images on the role of wine in ritual, history and art. The barrel cellar, reached by crossing the moat of the Rocca, displays containers and related trades, such as the glassmaker and the cooper, the history of the corkscrew and the vocabulary of wine. The last section covers Parma production, with pioneers, labels, grape varieties, food pairings, nearby wineries and the Consorzio dei Vini dei Colli di Parma. The visit ends with a tasting in the wine bar in the basement.
