About the museum
The abbey of Morimondo was founded by Cistercian monks from the French monastery of Morimond: after an initial settlement at Coronate, in November 1136 the community moved to the site where it still stands today, the “Campo di Fulcherio”. In the 13th century the monastery governed a territory of about 3,000 hectares, partly cultivated and partly wooded.
The complex, first built in wood and then in brick, using a kiln made by the monks themselves, largely dates from the 12th and 13th centuries, with alterations between the 15th and 17th centuries. The main restorations were carried out in the 20th century, and a campaign concluded in 2008 reopened the entire complex.
The museum is the abbey itself, run by the Fondazione Abbatia Sancte Marie de Morimundo. The guided tour takes in the church, the cloister, the chapter house, the monks' workrooms, the founders' room, the loggia, the refectory and the dormitory, across four levels.
