About the museum
The Pinacoteca Civica “Casimiro Ottone” is housed in the Castello Sforzesco of Vigevano, above the stables of Ludovico il Moro. Its ten mirror-image rooms hold the major works by artists from Lomellina, fragments of original 15th- and 16th-century frescoes from the Piazza Ducale and a work from 1515 by the Vigevano master Bernardino Ferrari.
The works span the 15th to the 20th century, with the greatest concentration in the 19th and 20th centuries. The 19th century opens with Giovanni Battista Garberini (1819-1896), master of modern painting in Vigevano and author of a gallery of portraits of the town’s middle class, including the “Ritratto della famiglia Campari”. The industrial development of Vigevano is followed by the acquisitions of “Le Temerarie” by Pompeo Mariani and the historical composition “La morte di Carlo Emanuele II”.
For the 20th century, works by Luigi Bocca, Luigi Barni, the brothers Cesare and Ferdinando Villa, Mario Ornati and Carlo Zanoletti, known for his views of the Ticino, are represented. The only major sculptor of the century in Vigevano is Giovan Battista Ricci, whose sketches for the “Monumento al Calzolaio d’Italia” are preserved.
