About the museum

The Forte Malatesta stands just outside the historic centre of Ascoli Piceno, on the left bank of the Castellano river, where as early as the pre-Roman and Roman periods a bulwark blocked access to the bridge. In 1349 Galeotto Malatesta, commander of the Ascoli militia, strengthened it and gave it its name. At the beginning of the 16th century a twelve-sided church dedicated to Santa Maria del Lago was built among the ruins; it is still visible in the central part.

In 1543, on commission from Pope Paul III Farnese, Antonio da Sangallo il Giovane erected a new fortress in the shape of an irregular star. In 1828 the fort was restored and remained in use as a judicial prison until 1978. After recent restoration, it was permanently reopened in November 2010.

Since March 2014 the fortress has housed the Museo dell’Alto Medioevo, which displays the grave goods of the Lombard necropolis of Castel Trosino, used between the 6th and 8th centuries. Among the finds stand out the complete graves of a lady, with jewellery and fibulae, and of a knight, with sword, shield and horse harness.
