About the museum
The Museo dell’Arte Ceramica in Ascoli Piceno was opened on 1 June 2007 and stands next to the Romanesque church of San Tommaso. The municipal collections and pieces on deposit from the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Ascoli Piceno and the Matricardi family are displayed in the museum’s rooms and in the cloister.
The route is divided into five sections devoted to Ascoli ceramic production, from the archaic majolica bacini (decorated dishes set into church walls) of the 15th century to the manufactories of the 19th and 20th centuries: the Paci manufactory (1808–1856), the Matricardi manufactory (1920–1929) and the F.A.M.A., with vases, plates, urns, coffee pots and cups.
The collection also includes the bequest of the physician and collector Antonio Ceci, donated to the municipality in 1920, with objects from the manufactories of Deruta, Faenza, Montelupo, Savona and Genoa, and a series of tiles painted by the Castelli masters Francesco and Carlo Antonio Grue and Berardino Gentili, from the Ascoli convent of Sant’Angelo Magno. A workshop equipped with a potter’s wheel and kilns completes the museum’s offer.
