About the museum

The Pinacoteca civica di Ascoli Piceno was officially founded on 4 August 1861 on the initiative of two local artists from Ascoli, Giorgio Paci and Giulio Gabrielli. It has always been housed in the imposing Palazzo Arringo, on Piazza Arringo, next to the city’s most important civic and religious buildings. The first works came from the collections of monasteries that were suppressed in January 1861.

The collection grew during the 20th century thanks to donations, deposits and bequests: in 1909 the Gabrielli donation of prints and drawings, in 1917 a deposit from the Galleria d’Arte Moderna di Roma and in 1920 the Ceci bequest. Today more than 800 objects are on display.

The most celebrated piece is the 13th-century cope of English manufacture that Pope Niccolò IV gave to the cathedral of Ascoli in 1288. Among the paintings, the two triptychs by Carlo Crivelli from Valle Castellana stand out, along with “Salita al Calvario” by Cola dell’Amatrice (1527), “San Francesco riceve le stimmate” by Titian, the “Annunciazione” by Guido Reni and the “Passeggiata amorosa” by Pellizza da Volpedo (1901). There are also works by Strozzi, De Ferrari, Magnasco, Mancini, Morelli and Palizzi.
