About the museum
The processing of hemp was the most important source of income in Pieve di Cento from the 19th century until the 1960s: a production chain that combined agriculture, craftsmanship, trade and early forms of industry. The hemp grown in this area was valued for the colour and strength of its fibre.
The museum, housed in Porta Asìa and owned by the Comune di Pieve di Cento, is managed by the Unione Reno Galliera. It collects tools and evidence of the entire production chain, from the cultivation of the seed to the finished product, with particular attention to the production of cordage.
The objects on display include the tools of the farmer, the gargiolaio, the spinner and the weaver. The new display, opened in 2013, includes a multimedia station that traces the history of hemp and the stages of its processing.
