About the museum

The Galleria d’arte moderna “Aroldo Bonzagni” was established in 1988 and is dedicated to the painter from Cento Aroldo Bonzagni (1887-1918). It came into being thanks to the donation of the artist’s sister, Elva Poggi, and is housed in the Palazzo del Governatore, a Renaissance building erected in 1502 on the main square of Cento.

The collection includes a substantial nucleus of works by Bonzagni, an exponent of an expressionism updated to the European research of the early 20th century and to early Futurism, and many paintings and sculptures by Italian and local artists of the 20th century, mainly figurative, with some representatives of abstraction, Informel, Spatialism and Conceptual art. The route starts from Bonzagni’s early works, passes through the artists who shared with him the climate of Futurism and reaches the subsequent generations of the fifties and sixties. Among the artists represented are Balla, Sironi, Sassu, Carrà, Guttuso and Fontana.

According to the Comune di Cento, the museum is currently under renovation and closed to the public; the building has lifts for access by people with disabilities.
