About the museum

The Museo della Cartolina in Isera was founded at the end of the 1980s, when the collector Carmelo Nuvoli donated his collection to the Comune. In 1992 the museum was named after his father, Salvatore Nuvoli, and in March 1994 it opened to the public. The first rooms resembled a “cabinet of curiosities”, with old books on the walls.

The museum is a documentation centre on the illustrated postcard, an Austro-Hungarian invention regarded as the ancestor of today’s short messages. The over 35,000 postcards, from 1869 to the present day, are kept in more than two hundred albums and divided into nineteen themes: over ten thousand concern Trento and Bolzano, about two thousand the First World War, about fifteen hundred technology and more than seven hundred music. Food, sport and religion are also represented. There are also patriotic propaganda, political satire and postcards made of cardboard, leather, wood and cork.

The materials also include posters, prints, ex libris, calendars and a collection of erinnofili, the small stamps that once sealed letters, as well as a library of about 5,000 volumes. For reasons of space, only a part, about a thousand items, is displayed on rotation; the others can be consulted in catalogues and binders.
