About the museum
The Metropolitan Cathedral of San Pietro is the mother church of Bologna, raised to metropolitan status in 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII. A door at the far end of the left minor aisle, on Via Indipendenza, gives access to the rooms set up for the Jubilee of 2000, where the Cathedral Treasury is permanently displayed.
It is a large collection of furnishings and sacred objects of great artistic value, made between the 15th and 20th centuries and donated to the cathedral by the bishops who succeeded one another on the episcopal see of Saint Petronius. The rooms are named after the bishops of Bologna who used the objects on display in the most solemn liturgies; more than half of the treasure comes from Pope Lambertini.
