About the museum
The museum opened on 12 December 2010 in the Palazzo Fauzone di Germagnano, in the historic Piazza district of Mondovì. Its original core is the donation of Marco Levi, an entrepreneur and banker who ran the Ceramica Besio, together with the Baggioli ceramic collection and his own personal collection. Behind the museum is the Fondazione “Museo della Ceramica Vecchia Mondovì – ONLUS”, established in 1999 on Levi’s initiative.
The palace, owned by the Province of Cuneo, has origins in the early decades of the 13th century; in the 18th century the Fauzone family unified its façade and interior spaces. In 1809 it hosted Pope Pius VII, a prisoner of Napoleon on his way to Savona. The historic rooms have decorated wooden ceilings, stuccoes and frescoes.
The route, divided into the first floor, the second floor and the multimedia rooms, tells the story of the Monregalese ceramics district: the birth of terraglia (earthenware) in Mondovì in 1805 on the initiative of the doctor Francesco Perotti, its establishment with Benedetto Musso, the great expansion of the second half of the 19th century, the crisis at the end of the century and the 20th century between art and industry. The decorating techniques are illustrated, such as tamponatura (sponging), transfer print and stampino (stencilling). The two multimedia rooms, “Fare ceramica” and “Apparecchiare la tavola”, allow visitors to discover the stages of production and to play with a laid table.
