About the museum
The civic museum holds part of the materials from the Roman sanctuary of La Cuma, a short distance from the village of Monte Rinaldo, in the southern Marche. The cult complex, dating to the 2nd and 1st centuries BC, comprised a main temple dedicated to Jupiter, a smaller cult building and a large portico enclosing the sacred area. It was brought to light in 1957 and is still under investigation.
After the 2016 earthquake, thanks to an agreement between the Soprintendenza delle Marche (heritage authority), the municipality of Monte Rinaldo, the University of Bologna and the British School at Rome, new systematic research began, accompanied by the documentation and restoration of the finds from the excavations. Some of these materials are presented in the permanent exhibition “Il santuario di Monte Rinaldo: archeologia del sacro”, set up in the “Giovanni Graziosi” room of Palazzo Fossi, in the centre of the village.
The finds, including fragments of architectural decoration and terracotta votive objects, illustrate the architecture and decorative apparatus of the sanctuary and the forms of worship practised there. Other finds from the same excavation are kept at the National Archaeological Museum of the Marche in Ancona.
