About the museum
The museum occupies rooms of the former convent of San Francesco in Campli, founded at the end of the thirteenth century. It opened in 1988 to house the finds from the Campovalano necropolis, which has been excavated since 1967.
The necropolis, in the municipal territory of Campli, has yielded 621 burials. The exhibition route, enriched by graphic and environmental reconstructions, illustrates the evolution of the funerary rite of the Campovalano community: from the Bronze Age village (14th–13th century BC) through the Orientalising period to the Hellenistic age and the Roman conquest between the 4th and 3rd century BC.
Among the main themes are the large tumulus burials with rich grave goods, of which the museum presents a reconstruction of the largest tumulus, and an anthropological section devoted to skeletal remains.
