About the museum

The gallery arose from the donation of the painter and collector Fortunato Duranti, born in Montefortino in 1787, who from around 1840 handed over to the Comune hundreds of works and furnishings from his own collection (sources give different dates between 1840 and 1850). It is considered the first public picture gallery in the Marche.

The collection is housed in Palazzo Leopardi, a 16th-century noble building that also houses the Museo d’Arte Sacra and the Museo Faunistico dei Sibillini. The complex is located in Largo Duranti.

The works on display, largely from the 15th to the 19th century, include paintings, prints and drawings by artists such as Pietro Alemanno, Jacopo del Sellaio, Pier Francesco Fiorentino, Perugino, Corrado Giaquinto and Cristoforo Unterperger, as well as numerous works by Duranti himself, including a self-portrait.
