About the museum
The Museo della Città di Livorno, opened in 2018, occupies the ground floor of the Bottini dell’Olio, a large 18th-century oil warehouse commissioned by Cosimo III in the Venezia quarter, and the former church of the Assunzione della Vergine e di San Giuseppe in Piazza del Luogo Pio. The two buildings are linked by a new structure built on the site left free by the demolition of the “Case Pie” after the Second World War.
The museum is part of the cultural complex of the Bottini dell’Olio, which has also housed the Biblioteca comunale since December 2017. The route, built with objects, images, installations and multimedia, tells the story of the city from its foundation to the end of the 16th century and its development between the 17th and 19th centuries, with a section on the Risorgimento. It includes spaces devoted to Livorno’s artists, cinema, cooking and satire.
The collections include some 600 works of art, numismatic and archaeological collections, among them the Etruscan and Roman finds of the Chiellini collection, donated to the municipality in 1883. The contemporary art section, set up in the baroque church, presents works by artists such as Piero Manzoni, Emilio Vedova, Pino Pascali, Enrico Castellani and Giulio Paolini.
