About the museum
The museum was the initiative of the archaeologist Luigi Adriano Milani, superintendent of Etruria, to display the grave goods unearthed in the Castiglioncello necropolis, discovered during urban development work between 1903 and 1911. More than three hundred tombs were brought to light, dating from the late 4th to the early 1st century BC, a sign of an active settlement favoured by the small bays that allowed ships to land easily.
The building was constructed between 1912 and 1914, in forms inspired by ancient architecture, and stands on a hill covered with Mediterranean scrub and pine woods, with a view of the sea near the Porticciolo bay. The museum opened to the public in 1916 and remained active for many years; in 1972–1973 it was closed and its collections were transferred to the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Firenze.
After the building was restored, the museum reopened in summer 2011 with the original core of the collections and a new display. It is now run by the Comune di Rosignano Marittimo under an agreement with the Direzione regionale Musei nazionali della Toscana.
