About the museum
The diocesan museum was inaugurated on 22 December 2008, on the initiative of Bishop Simone Giusti, and was enlarged a year later, on 22 December 2009. It gathers sacred works of art from the diocese of Livorno that had previously been scattered across the area.
The original nucleus is in the former public chapel of the Doctors of the Church, in the Girolamo Gavi Seminary, in the city's 19th-century centre, near the Cisternone and the Gherardesca complex. On the first floor are textiles and paintings from the 16th to the 18th century.
Among the works preserved are a silver and gilt-metal monstrance of 1692, liturgical vestments made in workshops from the 17th to the 19th century, a collection of ex-votos, a portable tabernacle given to the cathedral by Grand Duke Ferdinando I de' Medici at the beginning of the 17th century, and two panels from the Giottesque school from the church of San Jacopo in Acquaviva. The museum was among the first in Italy to use “bee tags” to obtain information about the works by mobile phone.
