About the museum
The museum opened in 1993 in four large rooms in the basement of Palazzo Sforza in Proceno. The core of the collection dates back to the 1980s, when objects were gathered by the cultural association named after Guido Ascanio Sforza; the municipality later bought a further 350 pieces from an antiques dealer.
The collection comprises around 2,000 items of domestic use and tools from pre-industrial society, dating from the 16th to the 20th century.
Palazzo Sforza was built in the mid-16th century on the orders of Cardinal Guido Ascanio Sforza. After the collapses of 1873 and 1890, the municipality acquired it in 1985 and began its consolidation and restoration. Besides the museum, the palace hosts exhibitions, conferences and cultural events.
