About the museum
The collection was started in Florence in 1878 on the initiative of Ernesto D'Amico, who gathered the first evidence of the history of the postal service. In 1907 the museum moved to Rome; it opened to the public in 1959 and was inaugurated at its present location in the EUR district in 1982.
The route covers about 3,500 square metres and holds around 3,000 objects and documents that tell the story of communication by land, sea and air up to the age of mechanisation. The sections cover post, telegraphy, telephony, radio and television, philately and postal history, with more than a million stamps and almost 90,000 postmarks and seals. The collection is completed by an archive of letters, documents, old newspapers, maps and books.
The museum belongs to the Ministero delle Imprese e del Made in Italy (formerly the Ministry of Economic Development) and is one of Italy's leading museums devoted to the history of telecommunications.
