About the museum
The Archivio Museo storico di Fiume is the seat of the Società di Studi Fiumani, founded in Fiume (Rijeka) in 1923 and re-established in Rome in 1960 by exiles. In 1963 the society set up the Archivio Museo in Rome, with the aim of preserving evidence of the city of Fiume and of the exodus of Italians from Istria, Fiume and Dalmatia after the Peace Treaty of 1947.
The exhibition is spread over two floors, each about 250 square metres. On the first floor a central memorial commemorates the Giuliano-Dalmatians who died. The visit continues with a documentary overview of the exodus, and with original objects and documents on the history of Fiume from its Roman origins to the post-war period, and on its urban, associative, school, religious and cultural life.
The second floor houses the historical archive with over 80,000 documents, including personal collections such as those of Riccardo Zanella and Antonio Grossich, the library with about 7,000 volumes, the newspaper archive with the historic Fiume newspapers, and the picture gallery with about 200 works by painters from Fiume, Istria and Dalmatia. The museum is recognised under Law 92/2004 establishing the Giorno del Ricordo (Day of Remembrance) and is supported by the Ministry of Culture.
