About the museum

The castle’s origins go back to the early Middle Ages: the first certain record dates from 898, when it is mentioned as a defensive refuge against Hungarian raids. In 1257 the fortress passed to the Landi family, who over the centuries transformed it from a military structure into an elegant residence with noble apartments, armouries and reception halls; under them it became the centre of an independent state. It later passed to the Farnese and the Bourbons, following the fortunes of the duchy until Italian unification, and between the 19th and 20th centuries it was also used as a military prison and as a seat of public offices, before being restored.

Today the castle offers museum routes on art, archaeology, witchcraft, nature and folk traditions. The Museo della Civiltà Valligiana, in the south wing, presents seven rooms showing everyday pre-industrial life in the Val Ceno, from the home to the crafts of the woodworker, the tailor and the shoemaker, and on to the cartwright, farrier and stonemason. The collection was started in the 1970s on the initiative of the Centro Studi della Val Ceno.

The Museo della Fauna e del Bracconaggio, started in 1994 by Giovanni Todaro and run by the municipality of Bardi since 2007, occupies the old granary overlooking the courtyard with the well. The four rooms cover the history, laws and techniques of poaching and the CITES Convention, with material from seizures by the Corpo forestale dello Stato (Italian forestry police).
