About the museum
The house lies on the hills north of Prato, in the district of Figline. The building, dating from the early twentieth century, was bought in 1935 by the artist and restorer Leonetto Tintori, who lived there until his death in 2000. Together with his wife Elena he founded here the Laboratorio per affresco, a school devoted to the techniques of mural painting, and later donated the property to the Comune di Prato.
Inside the villa are kept around 500 objects, including archaeological finds and works of ancient and modern art. In the park there are about 300 sculptures and reliefs in ceramic, cement, terracotta and bronze, made by Tintori and by other Tuscan artists of the twentieth century; a sculpture in the shape of Noah's Ark holds the ashes of the couple.
In the outbuildings behind the villa the Laboratorio continues its educational activities on mural painting and ceramics, and its research on the conservation of wall paintings, coordinated with the Getty Conservation Institute in Los Angeles and with international partners. The house is run by the Associazione Laboratorio per affresco Elena e Leonetto Tintori and is visited by appointment.
