About the museum
The museum is housed in the historic Palazzo della Fraternita dei Laici on Piazza Grande in Arezzo. The building has an early Gothic phase (1375–1377) and a Renaissance phase (1433–1460); it features a lunette by Bernardo Rossellino dated 1435, while the crowning of the façade follows a design by Giorgio Vasari from 1552. From 1786 the palace was leased to the Tribunale della Ruota Civile, and for many years it housed the city court.
The institution’s museum was founded in 1820 and collected donations, bequests and commissions from the 14th to the 19th century, including the archaeological excavations financed by the Fraternita. In 1935 much of the artistic, archaeological and scientific collections and the library were transferred and formed the core of the civic and later state museums and library. The museum was re-founded and opened to the public in 2010.
About 8,000 works remain in the palace, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints and antique furnishings, and form the heart of the display. The Fraternita also has a study room open to the public and the Archivio storico, with documents from the 14th to the 19th century, a fundamental source for the history of Arezzo.
