About the museum
The tower that houses the museum stands on the highest point of Aielli and dates from the Middle Ages: it is dated to 1356 and attributed to Ruggero, Count of Celano. Since 2002 the building has housed an astronomical observatory, which is why it is known as the Torre delle Stelle (Tower of the Stars).
The museum, initially called the Museo del Cielo (Sky Museum), was officially opened on 20 July 2019, on the 50th anniversary of the first Moon landing by Apollo 11. The display was designed by the municipality of Aielli together with the association Torre delle Stelle APS and other cultural bodies in the area.
The route is devoted to the Moon and space and includes telescopes and instruments for sky observation, optical instruments, sundials, photographs and a specialised scientific library. The tower also has a digital planetarium and computer stations for animations and simulations. Since 2019 the museum has displayed a replica of the lunar module (LEM) with material on the Apollo missions and a copy of the spacesuit worn by Neil Armstrong. Alongside astronomical observations, educational workshops and cultural initiatives are offered.
