About the museum
The museum came into being after 1932, when a valuable 16th-century Flemish tapestry was stolen from the collegiate church of Camaiore and was found again shortly afterwards. The episode prompted the gathering, in a single building, of the most important works from the churches of the area, which had until then been poorly protected. The institution dates from 1936.
The museum is located in Via IV Novembre, in a 17th-century building with a façade of two orders of four arches, on the site of the ancient village of Campus Maior, a stop along the Via Romea between Lucca and Luni. On this site stood a chapel dedicated to St Michael, documented from 1180, and a hospital for pilgrims and travellers; today the building houses the collections of the Confraternity of the Most Holy Sacrament.
The collections include paintings, sculptures, sacred furnishings and goldsmiths' work from the 14th to the 18th century, from the churches of the Camaiore area. Among the best-known works are the polychrome wooden statue of the Annunziata attributed to Matteo Civitali, a 14th-century polychrome wooden Madonna and Child, a 15th-century polyptych by Francesco d’Andrea d’Anguilla and the Flemish tapestry with the Stories of the Passion.
