About the museum
The museum is housed in the Palazzo Tori Massoni, a Renaissance building erected by the Orsucci family towards the end of the 16th century, between Via Vittorio Emanuele and Piazza Francigena in the historic centre of Camaiore. After a long restoration it reopened in 2016. Excavations in 2009 uncovered three medieval houses; a restored stretch of wall is visible along the route.
The thirteen rooms present finds from the local area, from prehistory to the Middle Ages and the proto-industrial age: bones, terracotta, containers for oil and perfume, iron tools, statuettes, musical instruments and jewellery. Among the most significant objects are a cast of a Neanderthal burial of about 50,000 years ago, the funerary urns from Vado La Serra, the Chalcolithic copper daggers from the Buca del Corno and the Renaissance ceramics of the historic centre.
The museum focuses on active participation, with touch, sound and smell stations, films on experimental archaeology, animations and videos. It also offers an audio guide, a virtual visit and programmes for people with dementia or on the autism spectrum.
