About the museum
The museum tells the story and fishing traditions of the Slovene inhabitants of the coast between Trieste and the mouths of the Timavo, who have lived on the shores of the Adriatic for more than a thousand years. It is run by the cultural association Museo della pesca del Litorale triestino and is located on the western side of the village of Santa Croce, between the Karst and the sea.
The exhibition brings together fishing tools, nets and implements of considerable ethnological value, together with documents dating back to the Middle Ages and period photographs of the daily life of the fishermen. Illustrated panels show the stages in the development of fishing, the small harbours of the coast, fishing methods and the fishing regulation of 1835, under which the Slovenes of the coast became holders of a strip of sea one nautical mile wide.
The captions are in Italian, Slovene and English. The thematic areas include the boats used for fishing, the divers, the stages of fishing, equipment and rare fish. The association has also acquired a house with a kitchen garden and courtyard that belonged to a fishing family, where a permanent exhibition on the housing culture of the fishermen of Santa Croce is planned.
