About the museum
The Karst house in Repen is a well-preserved example of spontaneous rural architecture of the Trieste Karst. It has no precise construction date but most probably dates from the last two decades of the 18th century; its present appearance dates from 1831, and the most recent works were carried out purely for conservation purposes.
The building is typical of Karst dwellings: an enclosed courtyard, the borjač, brings together the living quarters and the farm buildings, and stone is used everywhere for building and decoration, from the slab roof to the chimney, the well and the portal. A high wall shelters the courtyard from the bora wind.
The visit includes the kitchen, with the large open hearth, the hood and the wood-fired oven, and on the upper floor the bedroom and the attic, now used as exhibition space. In the farm rooms, tools and objects linked to viticulture, livestock farming and agriculture are on display, while the hayloft above the stables hosts temporary exhibitions. The house is run by the cooperative Naš Kras and every two years, in odd-numbered years, during the last week of August it serves as the symbolic groom’s house in the Nozze Carsiche (Kraška ohcet) festival.
