About the museum

The Progetto Bora Museum grew out of an idea dating back to 1999 and took shape in 2004 with the opening of the Magazzino dei Venti in Via Belpoggio in Trieste. More than a traditional museum, it is a curious, “in progress” space dedicated to the wind, which, in the project's motto, is “the air that plays”. The association that runs it has been a member of the Associazione Nazionale Piccoli Musei since 2013, and in 2025 it joined the regional M.E.S.S. network of ethnographic, historical and social museums of Friuli Venezia Giulia.

Today the museum is spread across space and time. Two new spaces have opened in Opicina with PNRR funding: the Borarium, with interactive stations, explanations, data, games and memories of the Bora for visitors of all ages, and, on the upper floor, the Università del Vento, a multipurpose space for cultural activities inspired by the wind, ranging from meteorology and science to creativity, with attention to sustainability and climate change.

The Magazzino dei Venti has become a wind documentation centre. It houses the “20 clues for a museum” trail, the Archivio dei Venti del Mondo with over 500 winds bottled or canned, a small art gallery on the theme, the archive of the scholar Silvio Polli and around a thousand titles including books, videos and other media. It can only be visited by appointment.
