About the museum

The castle was built at the wish of Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg, who in the mid-1850s bought the rocky promontory of Grignano, then almost bare of vegetation, to build a residence overlooking the sea. The first stone was laid on 1 March 1856. The design is by the Austrian engineer Carl Junker, while the interiors were made by the craftsmen Franz and Julius Hofmann. On Christmas Eve 1860 Maximilian and his wife Charlotte of Belgium moved to the ground floor, when the exterior was finished and the first floor was still being fitted out.

The style is eclectic and draws on Gothic, medieval and Renaissance models. The ground floor housed the couple's private apartments, with blue hangings evoking the sea; the first floor, intended for guests, was the representative floor, with rich decorations of coats of arms and red hangings. In the same period the 22-hectare park was created: large quantities of soil were brought from Styria and Carinthia onto the karst ground, and many species, often exotic, were planted, partly in the form of an English landscape garden and partly with geometric layouts.

After the death of Maximilian in Mexico in 1867, and Charlotte's departure for Belgium, the castle served the Habsburgs for brief stays. At the end of the First World War it passed to the Italian State, and in 1929 it was opened to the public. From 1932 Amedeo of Savoy-Aosta lived there for seven years, modifying his apartments to the taste of the time. Today the Museo storico e Parco del Castello di Miramare is a state museum of the Ministry of Culture with special autonomy since 2016.
