About the museum
In 2014 the Società Valsesiana Pescatori Sportivi obtained from the Comune di Varallo the free use of some rooms in the historic Palazzo D'Adda and began restoring them and setting up the museum. The project was supervised free of charge by the architect Gianni Gamondi, a member of the society. The exhibition spaces and educational workshops were officially opened on 9 May 2015.
The museum documents fishing as an art that has been practised over time and that today survives almost only as a recreational activity. The tools built by the Valsesian fishermen are on display, such as rods, lines and flies, together with photographs of catches and of the fishing environments of the valley. There are also images of the fishermen who sold the trout and grayling they caught.
One area is dedicated to the international recognition of Valsesian fly fishing, with the twinnings with traditional fly fishing in the region of León, Spain, and with Japanese tenkara. Valsesian fishing is also mentioned in a volume of the American Museum of Fly Fishing in Vermont. Two equipped rooms are used for teaching and for courses led by expert instructors.
