About the museum
The museum was born at the end of the 1960s from the gathering of materials by volunteers. A 1971 document cites it as a project, and in 1973 the town council decided to establish it; the ethnographic committee was entrusted to Giuseppe Sebesta, an ethnographer and museologist. In 1974 the municipality assigned the museum the former municipal slaughterhouse on Via Montevecchi.
The museum opened in 1981. In 1985 the Centro etnografico per la ricerca e la documentazione (C.E.R.D.), with archives, workshops and a library, was added; in 1989 a new wing expanded the sections and educational services. Since 1996 the MET has been a public institution with cultural and management autonomy.
The museum documents the popular culture of southern Romagna, between the Apennines and the Adriatic coast: symbols, sociability, work, ritual and art. The collections include a video library, an iconographic collection of Romagnol prints on canvas, a sound archive with interviews and songs, a photographic archive from the mid-19th century to 1970, and the “Paolo Toschi” library with over 6,000 volumes. The rooms are currently closed for renovation works, and the public can visit the Deposito, where archaeological and ethnographic objects from the MET and MUSAS museums are kept.
