About the museum
The Pieve di San Giovanni in Ottavo, known as the Pieve del Thò, stands just over a kilometre outside Brisighella and is considered the oldest pieve (parish church) in the Lamone valley. A legend attributes its foundation to Galla Placidia, on the remains of a pagan temple; the building probably dates from a period between the 8th and 10th centuries. The name derives from its position at the eighth milestone of the Roman road that linked Faenza with Etruria.
Excavations carried out inside the church between 1951 and 1967 brought to light archaeological material linked to the origins of the pieve. It is displayed in cases in the crypt and in the adjoining rooms: shaped and stamped bricks and tiles, bricks bearing human footprints, capital fragments, inscribed funerary stelae, a bronze that may be votive, flooring, fragments of glass unguentaria (perfume bottles) and large terracotta jars with numbers incised on the rim.
