About the museum

The museum, opened to the public in 1973, is housed in the Pieve di Gorto in the locality of Cella (Ovaro), one of the oldest places of worship in Friuli. The pieve, founded in the 8th century, was destroyed by fire and rebuilt in 1431. It stands on a rocky hill between the villages of Agrons and Cella and is one of the ancient baptismal churches of the Carnia, on the Cammino delle Pievi.

The route is divided between two venues. In the pieve are the archaeological section and the lapidary, with a fragment of a pre-Roman inscribed stone whose script has still not been deciphered, and two figures of orants in Carnic tufa. In the former dairy are displayed objects from the Roman and Lombard periods, including late Roman spoons and late antique jewellery, and works of sacred art: a 16th-century crucifix from the Carnic school, a sculptural group with Saint Martin by Domenico da Tolmezzo, an altarpiece of 1567 by Giuseppe Furnio, two processional banners painted on silk and a 17th-century tabernacle.
