About the museum
The Cludinico coal deposit, in the municipality of Ovaro, was opened in the last decades of the 18th century and worked intermittently for about two centuries, until the late 1950s. The Carnic anthracite supplied blacksmiths' forges and the region's industry. At its busiest up to 1,500 people worked there, and the hamlet became a mining village. The complex comprised about 150 km of galleries across three sites: Creta d'Oro, Vareton and Rio Malon. Activity ceased because the coal was exhausted and extraction and transport costs were high.
Today visitors see part of the Creta d'Oro mine, accompanied by a guide. The museum, opened on 6 December 2008 in the former warehouse of the mining village, is the starting point of the visit. It displays finds donated by miners and their families, a relief model of the mining site, maps, tools and materials from the technical office, and a short introductory film is screened there.
From the InfoPoint a downhill path leads in about a quarter of an hour to the mine entrance. The illuminated galleries are walked wearing helmets and lamps, at a constant temperature of about 15 °C.
