About the museum
The museum is in Aplis, in the municipality of Ovaro, in a complex that dates back to the second half of the 18th century. In 1754 Zuane Crosilla Toscano began building Aplis, with a project that included a mill, two sawmills and a small stable; the sawmill is dated 1755, in the period of Venetian rule.
The display arose from the recovery of an old water-powered workshop. The large Venetian-style sawmill (segheria alla veneziana) is visible in its original position: a water wheel drove a frame with the blade, which moved in an almost vertical direction, while a carriage moved the log back and forth horizontally; pushing the carriage against the blade produced the planks.
A trail of panels, rich in historic photographs, tells the story of the exploitation of the woods in Carnia and the role of timber in the valleys, explaining the techniques and the mechanism of the saw. The museum also includes a wildlife display with over one hundred specimens, mostly birds of the area.
