About the museum
The museum is housed in the oratory of the Compagnia del Nome di Gesù, built against the left aisle of the ancient pieve (parish church) of San Giovanni Battista. The date of construction of the confraternity's seat is unknown, but its present form dates from a renovation at the end of the 18th century.
It was established to preserve and make visible to the community an artistic heritage that testifies to the history and faith of the local population. The objects on display come from the treasury of the pieve and from the churches of Monastero and Montaio.
Among the most important works are the glazed terracotta sculptures, mostly white, by Benedetto Buglioni (between the late 15th and early 16th centuries), and a 13th-century processional cross in chased and gilded copper with a gilded bronze Christ from the previous century. On the back wall is a Circumcision of Christ attributed to the Florentine Benedetto Veli, topped by an 18th-century statuette of the Madonna del Carmine.
