About the museum
MINE, whose name echoes the one Ariosto gave to mines, opened on 4 July 2012 in several restored buildings of the old village of Castelnuovo dei Sabbioni, in the municipality of Cavriglia. The date commemorates each year the civilian victims of the Nazi massacres of 1944. The museum preserves the memory of the Castelnuovo mining area and has built its collections from objects, documents and photographs donated by the community.
The route begins in the 19th century, when the municipality of Cavriglia was founded and the industrialisation of the Valdarno began, and continues through rooms devoted to the first galleries, the work of the miners, tools and mining technology, with a small section on the passage of the war. The final rooms show the large machines used for open-pit lignite extraction, which changed the landscape and led to the disappearance of numerous hamlets.
The visit is multimedia and involves several senses: some areas allow you to touch objects, others let you hear the sounds of the mines or smell the lignite. The museum offers workshops for schools and families, camps and special days.
