About the museum

The museum was inaugurated on 11 March 1995 in a wing of Palazzo Orsini, the fortified residence overlooking the historic centre of Pitigliano. It holds mainly Archaic Etruscan materials from the excavations in the Poggio Buco necropolis and in the Pitigliano area.

The display route revolves around the restoration laboratory, an integral part of the visit, where some particularly interesting finds are also displayed. The main core is the Vaselli collection, formed of materials from the Poggio Buco necropolis excavated by Adele Vaselli between 1955 and 1960: geometric-style vases, bucchero drinking vessels for the symposium and Etruscan-Corinthian vases dating to 590–560 BC.

Another section presents the collection of Cavaliere B. Martinucci, with impasto ceramics and a fragment of an Attic black-figure kylix from the circle of Exekias, and the finds from the trial excavations in the historic centre of Pitigliano, including the area known as “Le macerie” and the northern slope, which document settlement from the Final Bronze Age, in the 12th century BC.
