About the museum
The museum occupies the church of San Mamiliano, in the historic centre of Sovana, restored and converted into a museum. A large archaeological campaign begun in 2004 revealed on the site a Roman thermal complex and a hoard of about 500 gold coins from the imperial age, dating to the 5th century AD. Part of the treasure was stolen, while the coins that remain are displayed at the place where they were found.
The display was renewed in 2020 and presents a route from the Etruscan period to the early Middle Ages, after the fall of the Roman Empire. The visit also includes part of the archaeological excavation and the crypt of the ancient church, now lit with a new system.
The museum is part of the Parco archeologico Città del Tufo and is connected to the Musei di Maremma network. Visitors can join guided tours of the collections, and there is a bookshop and an audio guide available via the izi.travel platform.
