About the museum
The museum is housed in the medieval fortress of Montefiorino, in the area that in 1944 was the partisan “zona libera” (free zone). It was set up to preserve and make present the memory of the liberation struggle, and it is the new version of a museum that opened in 1979 and was revised in 1996. The route focuses on the partisan Republic of Montefiorino.
The route is organised into nine rooms: Fascism, the Fascist war, the choice after 8 September 1943, civil life, the first winter and the role of women, the escalation of events, the massacres of Monchio, Susano, Costrignano and Cervarolo, the Republics of Montefiorino, which form the heart of the museum, and the liberation.
The collections include uniforms and original objects from the Fascist period, a howitzer used by the partisans, photographs, interactive maps, the Corti photographic archive and footage from the Istituto Luce. The rooms also feature audio content and stories on individual themes.
