About the museum
The Abetone forest botanical garden stands in the upper valley of the Sestaione stream, in the municipality of Abetone Cutigliano, at the locality of Acqua Bona, at an altitude of between about 1,280 and 1,308 metres. Conceived at the beginning of the 1980s, it was inaugurated on 11 July 1987, although the work to lay out the area was completed only at the beginning of the 1990s.
The garden, of about 14,000 square metres, was created to preserve and make known the environment of the high Tuscan-Emilian Apennines and in particular of the Pistoia mountains: the typical habitats of the area are reproduced on a small scale, with the species that characterise them. Because of the altitude, species such as hornbeam and chestnut, which grow lower down, do not grow here.
Today the garden is one of the itineraries of the Ecomuseo della Montagna Pistoiese, within its nature trail. In the area there is a small refuge which is the point of reference for guides and visitors; a little further away, at Fontana Vaccaia, a building serves as an educational centre where public meetings on ecology and botany are held.
