About the museum
The museum has been housed since 1954 in the Palazzo Neri Orselli, one of the very rare examples in Montepulciano that preserve the memory of 14th-century Sienese civic architecture. The building is the result of centuries of alterations and mergers of different structures and today presents a three-storey brick façade on Via Ricci, a courtyard with a loggia and a well, and four internal levels, one of them underground, adapted to exhibition use with clearly recognisable modern interventions.
The historic core of the picture gallery is due to Francesco Crociani, who at his death in 1861 left his collection to the Comune; today it comprises about one hundred and eighty works from the 14th to the 19th century. The route is organised into five sections: the archaeological section, with Etruscan grave goods and Roman finds coming mainly from the Acquaviva necropolis; the Poliziano section, with stone objects, ceramics and metalwork, such as a 16th-century Marzocco and the coats of arms of the Cocconi and Cervini families; the Della Robbia terracottas; the picture gallery; and the studiolo, a gallery reconstructed for small-format paintings.
Among the best-known works are the Crucifixion by Filippino Lippi, the Holy Family with San Giovannino by Sodoma, a Sant'Agnese by Beccafumi, the terracottas by Andrea della Robbia and the silver funerary mask of Sant'Agnese da Montepulciano. The museum also houses a Portrait of a Gentleman that some scholars propose as a work by Caravaggio.
