About the museum
The museum is housed in Palazzo Corboli, formerly known as the Bargagli farm, a rare example of a medieval palatium built by the Sienese merchants Bandinelli in the second decade of the 13th century, when the Republic of Siena was extending its rule over Asciano. Despite the transformations of the centuries, the palace retains original parts, such as the Sala di Aristotele and the Sala delle Stagioni, with two cycles of 14th-century allegorical frescoes attributed to Cristoforo di Bindoccio and Meo di Pero, which conveyed ethical and political messages.
The sacred art section presents works by the leading Sienese artists from the 13th to the 17th century: the Nativity of the Virgin by the Master of the Osservanza, the polyptych of Badia a Rofeno by Ambrogio Lorenzetti, works by Taddeo di Bartolo, Matteo di Giovanni, Rutilio Manetti, Bernardino Mei and Francesco Nasini, wooden sculptures by Francesco di Valdambrino and Giovanni Pisano, as well as a collection of goldwork and liturgical furnishings. An important nucleus consists of medieval and modern ceramics, including early majolica from a waste pit.
The archaeological section documents the Etruscan-Roman world of the Upper Ombrone Valley: grave goods from the necropolises of Poggio Pinci, the Tumulo del Molinello and the Poggione, including a rare Etruscan chariot, and finds from the Roman baths complex of Campo Muri at Rapolano Terme.
