About the museum
The museum originates from the Papal Mint in Rome and from the numismatic and medallic collections formed there between the late 18th and the 19th century. In 1824 the Gabinetto Pontificio delle Medaglie was established; after 1870 management passed to the Kingdom of Italy, while in 1958 the Italian Republic officially established it as a museum.
In 1978, with the transfer of the State Mint to the then Istituto Poligrafico, the numismatic collections became part of the heritage of the current Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato (IPZS), which runs the museum. A group of period machines, some still working, has been added to the collection.
The heritage exceeds 20,000 works of historical and artistic interest: coins of Italian and foreign states from the Middle Ages to today, including trial strikes and designs, medals by artists of every period, dies and punches, some from the papal collection, and an important series of wax models for medals and cameos, the largest group of which consists of the 425 waxes by Benedetto Pistrucci.
