About the museum
The museum is housed in the Cassero di Porta Sant'Angelo, the largest of Perugia's medieval gates: a crenellated building of stone blocks and brick at the end of Corso Garibaldi, near the convent of Monteripido. The tower, which once also served as an entrance to the city, rises over three floors plus the roof terrace.
The route documents the history of the city's three circuits of walls. On the entrance level, panels tell the story of Perugia over the centuries, and scale reproductions show the three phases of the city's expansion: the ancient Etruscan wall, the medieval wall, of which the Cassero forms part, and the Renaissance wall. On the upper floor, reproductions of the main gates of each phase are on display, including models of the Arco Etrusco, the Cassero and Porta San Pietro, which is decorated with reliefs by Agostino di Duccio.
From the roof of the tower, which is surrounded by Guelph battlements, there is a view over the city.
