About the museum
The museum of the Fondazione Sportsystem, founded in 1984 and completely renovated in 2024 for its fortieth anniversary, is one of the few examples in Italy of a district museum. It is housed in Villa Zuccareda Binetti in Montebelluna and tells the story of the sports footwear district, which grew out of the craft knowledge of shoemakers and was later transformed by technological innovation.
The collection comprises more than 2,800 historical objects (machines, tools, equipment) and footwear items, around 1,400 patents, more than 4,000 catalogues from Italian and foreign companies, and a specialised library with over 3,000 historical journals and books and an archive of theses.
The exhibition route, fully accessible, unfolds across eight permanent rooms plus a room for temporary exhibitions. After the presentation of the district and the origins of the sector, footwear is displayed according to the environment for which it was designed: “Pietra e Terra” for mountain and outdoor, “Neve e Ghiaccio” for winter sports, “Piste e Campi” for motorcycling, cycling, football, basketball and athletics. A special section commemorates the Italian expedition to K2 in 1954 with the boots of Compagnoni and Lacedelli. Multilingual multimedia content and an interactive area complete the visit.
