About the museum
The Centro Culturale Turistico San Basilio was opened in 1995 to house some of the finds that emerged during the archaeological excavations carried out in San Basilio, a hamlet of Ariano nel Polesine, between the late 1970s and the early 1980s.
The materials are presented in three display cases. The first holds the oldest finds: domestic pottery of Palaeovenetic and Etruscan type, made locally, from a settlement of the 6th–5th century BC located near the coastline. The second contains fine tableware, oil lamps, needles and pins of bone or horn, glass and terra sigillata, found in a Roman villa excavated in the 1980s a few hundred metres from the village centre.
The third case displays elements of the villa, including roof tiles, fragments of painted plaster and numerous amphorae, a sign of the intense trade in goods along river and land routes. Near the villa two large squared blocks of pink Domegliara marble were also found, one of which is placed outside the centre. Nearby, visitors can see the Romanesque chapel and the archaeological area with the remains of an early Christian complex.
